LOVE YOUR SKIN - Healthy Skin, Its Anatomy & Why Natural & Organic Skincare Works

Beauties did you know that skin is an organ, alive, growing and changing every second of every day? Now let’s take a couple minutes and think of all the elements it’s exposed to, the sun, the air and everything else we come in contact with, both good and bad.

Despite the way our skin looks its highly permeable allowing what you apply to your skin access your bloodstream and thereby to the rest of your body. Yes it is in fact the largest organ – it’s also the thinnest and only 1/10th of an inch separates you from all sorts of harmful toxins.

Before we take a closer look at the benefits of Gia Minerals Natural & Organic Skincare for healthier skin let’s take a closer look to consider facts about your skin you might not know, its interesting anatomy and the basics of how skin is structured.

FACT #1 : You lose millions of dead skin cells every day - about 30,000 to 40,000 dead skin cells are sloughed off of your body every minute. Over the course of your life, you will shed about 40 pounds (18 kilograms) of dead skin.

FACT #2: Your body is constantly generating new skin cells to replace the ones that you shed off. In fact, the top layer of your skin, called your epidermis - is fully replaced about once every 30 days.

FACT #3: Your skin accounts for as much as 15 percent of your entire body weight.

FACT #4:Every day, about 2.5 million sweat glands in your skin secrete about 2 cups of sweat.

Beautiful Anatomy and Structure of Your Skin

The skin is a complex organ, one that consists of three layers that are optimally organized to protect you against disease and injury. These layers are called your epidermis, dermis, and hypodermis, and they're described below.

Epidermis: The uppermost layer of your skin - the one that is in contact with the air and is only about 10% of the thickness of the skin composed of five different layers. The bottom most layer of your epidermis is called the basal layer, and as your basal layer produces new skin cells, they move up toward the surface, where they are eventually sloughed off as dead skin. Your epidermis houses cells called melanocytes that produce melanin, which provides some protection against ultraviolet rays, and also partly determines the color of your skin.

Dermis: Below your epidermis lies a thicker layer called your dermis. In contrast to your epidermis, which is constantly replacing itself, the dermis houses a number of structures, the most prominent ones being blood vessels and lymphatic vessels. It also contains tough connective tissue, hair follicles, and sweat glands, but most importantly it is where collagen and elastin fibers are located. Collagen is a protein that gives your skin strength and flexibility while elastin is a protein that gives your skin the ability to return to its original shape whenever it is manipulated. This layer is about 20-25% of the skins total thickness, but it serves as the building grounds for the beautiful skin on top.

Hypodermis (Subcutaneous tissues): Below your dermis is a layer that consists mainly of fat, and is called your hypodermis or subcutaneous layer.  The Hypodermis is made of fat and connective tissue and its primary function is to act as an insulator and allow blood vessels to carry oxygen to the layers above. This layer of skin constitutes approximately 70% of your skins’ thickness. It’s what gives your skin that soft squishy feeling when you poke it.

As we said above being the largest organ in your body, your skin plays a number of critical roles in keeping you healthy and its important maintain and keep it healthy by using products that work through all the layers. This is why it’s important to use natural & organic skincare  that deliver healthy better-looking skin in terms of elasticity, firmness, and overall texture.

Most of you have probably found that most products fall short of their promised results, and never deliver results. With most skincare products you apply the product to your skin, it absorbs, dries out, and you go about your day hoping that at some point you'll see a difference. These is what we call topical products, they fill in the large openings in your skin and only partially absorb into the top-most layer where their active ingredients have little to no effect on actually improving the skin's surface. The lack of absorption and deep penetration of most creams is due to the size of the creams molecules. In most cases, the cream's molecules are just too big to fit through the absolutely microscopic openings in your skin to allow it to get to the dermis. As we learned in the Skin Basics section, the skin is a multi-layer organism and the real catalyst of what you see on the surface of your skin starts much deeper, at the Dermis. That's why simply applying a topical solution won't really have any lasting effects.

At Gia Minerals we strive to keep skin always at it very best therefore, in our skincare formulations we don’t use Aqua (water), as it evaporates and has no direct effect or results when applied on the skin. In most case water is added to skin care to yield more however, water, waters down the oil and doesn’t allow it to disperse properly. Also water collects bacteria faster than any oil or other ingredients. At Gia Minerals we take our formulation a step further and instead of using water in our formulations we use organic Aloe Vera  which has four times the moisture of water and when applied on the skin it locks in moisture preventing it from leaving, penetrating into the cell membranes to re-hydrate and plump up the layers of the skin.
